For this purpose various health screening tests are recommended for the Bernese dogs. Canine Health Information Center (CHIC)

Elbows X-rays:

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) examines these dogs when their age is 2 years for Elbow X-rays. A special elbow number is provided to every passed Bernese dog which ensures that he has gone through the testing. The family of a Bernese dog have the same Elbow X-ray number.

Eye Testing:

The eyes are tested under an ophthalmologist to check any eye problem. The Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) is responsible for the results. This OFA examination is taken every year. Various diseases are related to eyes and respective testing is done.  

Heart:

Bernese dogs contain Subaortic Stenosis (SAS) is a disease. And this Bernese dog with positive Subaortic Stenosis must not be bred due to inheritance of the disease.                                 

Histio Pre Test:

A Histio Pre Test is a breeding tool in order to make pairs to avoid their baby puppies getting affected by the Malignant Histiosarcoma. This test is not meant for the prediction of the Histio but it helps in  additional research of disease and health care.
