Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (BMDCA) is working for the health of good physical condition, fitness and well-being. For this purpose various health screening tests are recommended for the Bernese dogs. The in charges of these Bernese mountain dog health screening use several tests to examine the genetic issues in these dogs. Some major tests are enlisted below as:  

Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) 

                                          The five compulsory tests set by the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) for the breed of Bernese Mountain Dogs to ensure their health by proper insurance of these tests to every single and individual dog of this breed. After testing, a proper CHIC number is given to every tested Bernese Mountain Dog which ensures that the dog has gone through the testing phase. Those
Five test are as follows: 

Hips X-rays:

These Hips X-rays are for dogs of two years of age and an examination is taken under Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. A specific hip number is provided to Bernese dogs who have passed their tests which ensure that they are not suffering from hip dysplasia. Dogs are given grades such as fair, good and excellent

Elbows X-rays:

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) examines these dogs when their age is 2 years for Elbow X-rays. A special elbow number is provided to every passed Bernese dog which ensures that he has gone through the testing. The family of a Bernese dog have the same Elbow X-ray number.

Eye Testing:

The eyes are tested under an ophthalmologist to check any eye problem. The Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) is responsible for the results. This OFA examination is taken every year. Various diseases are related to eyes and respective testing is done.  


Bernese dogs contain Subaortic Stenosis (SAS) is a disease. And this Bernese dog with positive Subaortic Stenosis must not be bred due to inheritance of the disease.                                 

Histio Pre Test:

A Histio Pre Test is a breeding tool in order to make pairs to avoid their baby puppies getting affected by the Malignant Histiosarcoma. This test is not meant for the prediction of the Histio but it helps in  additional research of disease and health care. 


A Bernese Mountain Dog health screening is a compensation for Bernese dogs.
